A young Muslim mum died when her hijab became tangled in the wheels of a go-kart and strangled her.

Mariam Dadoun, 26, was on holiday with her husband and two sons, aged six and four, when she was killed.

Witnesses said her clothing was "wrapped around her neck" during the accident in Port Stephens, Australia.

Her scarf appeared to have been pulled across her throat, with the longer part wedged near one of the go-kart's axles. Sharon Scott, who was waiting to use the track when the tragedy happened, said: "The kart hit the wall and stopped and she was just slumped over."

Her family last night paid tribute to Mariam, of Sydney, describing her as a "devoted mother". Her aunt, who asked not to be named, added: "She was the best. She helped everyone."

The track was immediately closed by authorities who said it was unregistered.
